A couple accused of abusing their adopted child will be charged at the Bandar Baru Bangi court today after being arrested on Friday in connection with the case.
Bernama reported that Mohd Zaid Hassan, the head of the Kajang district police, said the investigation document pertaining to the case was forwarded to the Selangor Public Prosecutor’s Office yesterday and they have been instructed to charge both the 28-year-old and 30-year-old suspects.
Hassan said the two will be charged with jointly injuring a child under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act of 2001, read in conjunction with Section 34 of the Penal Code. If found guilty, they may face a fine of up to RM20,000 or a sentence of up to 10 years in jail, or both.
“A male individual who is also a Singaporean will also be charged under Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for overstaying and if convicted, could be fined not exceeding RM10,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years, or both,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Last week, a viral video on the internet showed the woman beating the 4 year-old child with a stick while the child was crying and had food in their mouth.
The woman’s act was condemned by users, with some calling for police action against the woman. The video was posted by a man named Aqiel, an employee of the woman who was at the house at the time.
The husband and wife have been detained for seven days since last Friday, according to reports in the media. They were accused of torturing a 4-year-old child in a home in Beranang, Selangor.
The child, who was reportedly given to the couple by an Indonesian woman in April. is said to have been burned with lighters and assaulted with clothes hangers and broomsticks.
