Cops track down cyber-offender and discover other ‘activity’

It’s not everyday that the police get to catch a cyber-offender who also happens to be running a lucky draw scam.

But it happened recently when cops scored a double victory after tracking down a man who allegedly posted seditious comment.

TheSundaily’s Charles Ramendran reports that police also uncovered his other activity – a scam in which victims are conned to believe that they had won lucky draws that don’t actually exist – during a night raid on an apartment at Jalan Alor on Sept 10.

These victims are promised jackpot cash prizes and trips abroad. In fact, according to federal commercial crime department director DCP Hamza Taib, one of the suspects involved in the scam had even gone to China to be trained on how to operate the scheme.

Along with the main suspect, who was wantd by police for posting comments deemed seditious, eight other were arrested.

“His scathing online postings inadvertently exposed his crooked ways. Our officers spotted the seditious contents he posted online and managed to trace the suspect to the apartments,” Hamza was quoted as saying.

Hamza said in the report that the syndicate would call random people to inform them of a ‘lucky draw’ and that they have won prizes including USD150,000 as well as trips to New Zealand and Australia.

The catch? Pay several thousand ringgit to redeem their prize.

In true scammer fashion, the suspects would disappear the moment a transaction is completed.
