Prime Minister Najib Razak might have to come face-to-face with one of his most vocal detractors next week, as former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has confirmed that he will be attending the UMNO General Assembly.
News of the confirmation was released by UMNO secretary-general Tengku Adnan Mansor in Putrajaya today.
“Tun Mahathir has given his answer that he and (his wife) Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali will be attending,” Ku Nan said, as quoted by mStar.
Ku Nan added that UMNO is now awaiting confirmation of attendance from Mahathir’s successor as UMNO president and prime minister, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and his wife Jeanne Abdullah.
The UMNO General Assembly will kick off on December 8 and will end on December 12, with 5,738 party delegates expected to attend.
Mahathir has become one of Najib’s most vocal critics, following the alleged wrongdoings surrounding sovereign investment fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), to which Najib has been closely linked.
Dr M has also criticised Najib for allegedly covering up his involvement in the 2006 murder of Mongolian model/translator Altantuya Shaariibuu, and has expressed worry that Najib’s tenure as Prime Minister and UMNO president has been detrimental to both the nation and the ruling Malay party.
