Two popular wet markets in the city — the Selayang wholesale market and Chow Kit market — have been found to be infested with rats.
Bernama reports that both markets, along with those in Pudu, Sentul and Keramat face the risk of being exposed to the potentially deadly leptospirosis or commonly known as ’rat urine disease’.
Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) officers have captured a crazy 6,000 rodents in the five markets over the past month!
“We conduct operations to catch rats in these markets five times a week and each day we would set up more than 50 mouse traps,” City Hall senior assistant environmental health officer Mariappan Chinniah told Bernama.
This figure isn’t that shocking to City Hall, as Mariappan explained that not much has changed in these locations over the past five years.
“The main factors contributing to the abundant presence of rats in markets are the water, food wastes and shelters such as holes in the drain,” he was quoted as saying.
According to Bernama, reporters present at the operation had seen seven medium-sized brown rats caught within five minutes at the Pudu market on Friday, noting that the area was ‘filthy’.
