Celebrity chef Wan bites back at son-in-law

Money can buy you state of the art kitchen equipment, and a closet full of fancy shirts, but it still can’t buy you class.

Over the weekend, beloved Malaysian celebrity Chef Wan took to Instagram and joined the ranks of tasteless reality TV personalities by airing his dirty laundry. In the world of knowing way too much about people you’ve never heard of, this situation took the proverbial cake.

It seems that Chef Wan’s daughter’s marriage is heading for divorce. His daughter, Serina Redzuawan, married Irishman Gavin O’Luanaigh in 2010.

In an emotionally charged post over the weekend, the chef, whose real name is Redzuawan Ismail, wrote that the couple’s marriage was beyond repair.

“After advising my son-in-law numerous times on the importance of a husband’s responsibilities to provide monthly financial support to his wife and his refusal to accept my advice, I am very happy that my daughter is filing for divorce; we will go ahead with the legal proceedings to fight for her rights and justice too”

The chef went on to tell the husband to stop being “a cheap f****** bastard”. He may mince onion, but he doesn’t mince words.

His post has garnered nearly 12,000 likes, which I will wager came from 11,999 strangers to the couple (ed: Chef Wan is the kind of man who likes his own posts).

Last night, the beseiged husband issued his own statement, telling his side of the story in an unedited statement that continued to praise his wife as the energetic and fun-loving mother of his children. Although the chef had implied that his daughter had to work, the Irishman wrote that it had always been his wife’s dream to pursue a working life in the spotlight and that he supported this.

He asked for privacy, and slapped down the celebrity chef’s assertions that he hadn’t provided for his family.

“Throughout our married life I have diligently paid for everything for the family – providing a six-bedroom penthouse, paid all the family bills, maid, holidays and even made sure that both our children went to an international school so they could have the best education that I could provide”

He added that although the state of marriage entered the public gossip mill only recently, Serina had actually left the marital home, and her children, in January 2016. Although the two did not see eye to eye on their future, O’Luanaigh claims that they both had wished to keep the matter private.

Privacy, in the age of over-sharing, seems almost like a quaint idea.

This morning, Chef Wan awoke with a fire under his feet, and took to Instagram to elaborate further on his side of the story of his daughter’s marriage.

His account, which is visible to followers only, calls out the Irishman’s statements, and claims that although he was indeed a good father, it was his lack of financial support that led to the dissolution of the marriage.

Contrary to asking for no monetary contribution to the household, it is claimed that he asked for RM5,000 a month, violating the duty of the man to provide nafkah, monetary support to a wife under Islamic law.

Furthermore, he called O’Luanaigh “one hell of a liar” and finished this morning’s statements by saying he couldn’t “wait [for] all this drama in court.”

If you’re looking for marriage advice, divorced Chef Wan has some words for you: remember your vows and a wife should be “spoilt by the husband”

Let’s hope this includes less drama and a few blouses.
