Cash in the ‘stache: University student starts multi-million dollar body wax business with RM124

Twenty-four-year old university student Noorain Mohd Said, had an epiphany in 2012: there is a goldmine in tiny hairs sitting on women’s bodies. With RM124 (less than US$30), she launched an organic body waxing product called Norah. This year, her business pulled in RM3.4 million, yes MILLION, in revenue (about US$800,000).

Her orders have expanded beyond the campus demand she was initially met with. Consumers as far as Brunei, Singapore, Indonesia and even the United States are buying her mix of honey, sugar, concentrated lemon and tea tree oil. She adds that the mild formula makes it usable by even those with sensitive skin.

Noorain says that she saw a gap in the market for waxing products that people like herself could use at home, and not necessarily go to a salon. Her network of students helped to push her product to others, and the effectiveness of her product meant that they continued to come back for more.

The final year Education undergraduate was sharing her story yesterday with other students who have started enterprises at Berjaya Times Square in KL.

Higher Education Ministry Secretary General Tan Sri Dr Noorul Ainur Mohd Nur said, regarding the event, that “we are hoping that with such inspirational stories, their entrepreneurial acumen instead of just working for others.”
