The fatal stabbing of two British medical students in Kuching on Tuesday brought more than a hundred people out to Pandungan, for a candlelight vigil held in honour of the two victims.
The victims, Aidan Brunger, 22, and Neil Dalton, 23, were killed when an altercation with four local men after an encounter at a bar escalated into deadly violence. Both victims were found dead of multiple stab wounds at Jalan Abell.
The small crowd of mourners, which included friends of the victims and Sarawak state social development minister Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom, arrived at around 7.30pm last night to light candles and offer bouquets of flowers in memordy of the victims.
In Kuala Lumpur, Professor Reg Jordan of the UK’s Newcastle University said he was working with local authorities to arrange for the bodies of the victims to be sent back to the UK soon.
Jordan said the immediate priority is assist the families of the victims and to ensure that the bodies are sent back to the UK as soon as possible.
“We are giving whatever help we can in these tragic circumstances,” Bernama quotes him as saying.
Both Brunger and Dalton arrived in Kuching in June to undergo practical training at a local hospital. They were scheduled to end their training and head home by the end of the month.
“They were both excellent and committed students with so much potential, who will be greatly missed by everyone in the medical school. The whole university deeply mourns their loss,” Jordan said.
Four suspects have been detained in the case, to facilitate the murder investigations.
