If the government goes ahead with its plan to legalise ride-sharing apps such as Uber and Grab, cab drivers nationwide will reportedly go on a week-long protest.
Malaysian Taxi Drivers’ Transformation Association (Pers1m) president Kamaruddin Mohd Hussain told The Malay Mail Online that cab drivers are unhappy that the government has decided to embrace both services, which they claimed have been ‘stealing’ their customers.
“The date (of the protest) has yet to be determined but it will take place.
“Tension between taxi drivers and the ride-hailing services continues to escalate.
“The goal of the strike is to show the government that the taxi industry is suffering because of the unfair playing field,” he was quoted as saying.
Last week, the government gave the Land Public Transport Commission’s (SPAD) the green light to regulate the ride-sharing services.
