While the majority of progressive individuals celebrated Australia’s majority vote for marriage equality that included same-sex couples, a man in Tawau, Sabah decided while some took a step forward, we needed a couple of paces back on our home turf.
Tawau Youth Association chairman, Shamry Mohamad Sani lodged a police report over a Facebook post that he came across of two men who were celebrating they “pre-wedding” ceremony in Kuala Lumpur.
Let it be on the record that same-sex marriage isn’t a thing here yet, so his police report is essentially against two people just declaring their love for each other, which isn’t illegal, FYI.
Now local police chief Fadil Marsus says that the two men, believed to be Chinese, have been asked to come into the station for a statement and questioning.
And this is why we can’t have nice things.
Wait. WAIT. There’s hope. Pro-LGBTQ+, Malaysia-founded, and based, company Air Asia yesterday tweeted this in support of the Australian ruling. More of this!
