Bus flips over on PLUS Expressway; 19 injured

A bus carrying 19 people, including two drivers, flipped over on its side after colliding with a pick-up truck at the North-South Expressway (PLUS) near Jawi, Penang. 

The accident occured at 9.44pm on Saturday, at KM164 of the expressway. According to police, the bus was on its way to Alor Star from Genting Highlands. The bus driver was trying to avoid a pick-up truck after the truck overtook his bus on the right lane, before suddenly swreving back into the left lane and onto the path of the bus. 

Two passengers were taken to the Seberang Jaya Hospital with fractured limbs sustained from being trapped underneath the resulting wreckage. 

Several other passengers were givrn outpatient treatment at the Sungai Bakap Hospital. Most of the people on the bus escaped relatively unhurt. 

The driver of the pick-up truck fled the scene. 

South Seberang Perai OCPD Supt Shafien Mamat said police are now looking for a man in 40’s to assist in ivestigations. 

“Until now, we have yet to locate the other driver nor has he lodged a police report about the accident,” he said.

The case was being investigated as reckless driving under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act.
