Bukit Aman police inspector and his father in jail over 2009 fatal shooting

A police inspector from Bukit Aman was sentenced to 12 years in prison and a stroke of the cane by the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court yesterday over the fatal shooting of a Pakistani man in Jalan Masjid India in 2009.

Judge Rosbiahanin Arifin ruled that the defence had failed to raise a reasonable doubt on the prosecution’s case against Mohd Soffian Mohd Yusof, 31, who has since been suspended from the PDRM.

Mohd Soffian’s father, Mohd Yusof Khir Din, 54, was also sentenced to six months in prison for making a false statement to cover for his son while lodging a police report at the Tun HS Lee police station on the day of the incident, fz.com reports.

Mohd Soffian was accused of intentionally shooting and seriously injuring Ahmad Muzaffar with a Victor gun in front of City One Plaza, Jalan Masjid India at 12.20 am on March 3 2009.

He was charged under Section 326 of the Penal Code which provides for up to 20 years imprisonment, fine or caning or both, upon conviction.

His father Mohd Yusof was charged under Section 203 of the Penal Code with giving false information about an offence. In his police report, Mohd Yusof said the Pakistani man attacked his son with a machete.
