Budget airlines AirAsia to move to KLIA in January 2017?

Starting January next year, you could be heading to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) more often.

The New Straits Times reports that budget airlines AirAsia is planning to move its entire operations to the main airport by January next year.

The daily reported that the group’s affiliates — AirAsia Bhd (AirAsia), Thai AirAsia, Philippines AirAsia, Indonesia AirAsia, AirAsia X Bhd and Indonesia X — had also agreed to relocate to KLIA.

The decision was reportedly made following new revisions made to the passenger service charges (PSCs) by the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) earlier this week.

“AirAsia Group is serious about moving to KLIA main terminal. The decision to move is due to the lower PSC.

“With the reduction of PSC at KLIA, AirAsia intends to move its operations as soon as the new charges are applicable,” an unnamed spokesperson told the daily.

The daily also reported that the airline’s management will present its relocation and operational requirements to the airport operator on November 7.

Meanwhile, due to AirAsia’s impending move, several airlines based at KLIA would have to move their operations to klia2, the Business Times reported.

This was due to KLIA reaching its capacity of handling up to 25 million passengers per year.

“KLIA’s capacity is already reaching its maximum now. If the entire AirAsia Group moves to the Main Terminal, then some airlines would have to shift their operations to klia2,” a source was quoted by the news site as saying.
