Boy, Malaysians sure get their cars stolen a lot!

It is either Malaysians are really an unlucky bunch, or they just simply do not know how to lock their cars.

According to The Star Online, Malaysia is said to be ranked in the top 10 list of countries with the highest number of vehicle theft cases.

General Insurance Association of Malaysia’s (PIAM) chief executive officer Mark Lim told the news portal that an average of 60 cars get stolen around the country every day.

He added that the industry’s half-year report revealed that a total of RM2.41 billion in insurance claims have been paid out in just the first half of the year.

“This equates to a staggering RM13.2mil per day payout in motor claims for property damage, bodily injury and vehicle theft,” Lim was quoted as saying.

Despite a drop in vehicle theft cases in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period last year, Lim told the news portal that Malaysia — reportedly ranked sixth globally for auto theft in 2015 — is still ranked top ten in the world this year.

“The total number of stolen vehicles for all classes in the first half of this year was 11,796 vehicles compared with 12,412 for the same period in 2015.

“This represents a 5% reduction in the number of vehicle thefts,” he told The Star Online.
