Bodies of workers killed in MRT construction collapse to arrive in Bangladesh today

The bodies of the three Bangladeshi workers killed on Monday’s MRT concrete spand collapse will arrive in Dhaka, Bangladesh today.

The collapse of a 490-tonne concrete span at a Mass Rapid Transit Corporation (MRT Corp) construction site near the Rubber Research Institute in Kota Damansara buried Mohamad Faruk KHan, 38, Mohammad Alauddin Mollik, 34, and Mohammad Elahi Hossain, 27 under debris, killing them.

The Malay Mail‘s Alexander Winifred reports that an MRT Corp spokesperson said the company and the contractor at the site of the incident, Syarikat Muhibbah Perniagaan dan Pembinaan (SMPP), had been coordinating the arrangements for repatriating the remains with the Bangladeshi High Commission.

“The families of the victims have been informed and they will be on hand to receive the remains at Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka,” the spokesman said.

The construction site where the collapse occured is now under an indefinite stop-work order. MRT Corp strategic communications and public affairs director Amir Mahmood Razak said work would not recommence at the site until the Deaprtment of Occupational Safety  and Health (DOSH) lifts the halt order after investigations into the cause of the incident had been completed.

“MRT would have to propose a set of actions to ensure the incident does not recur. Only if and when DOSH agrees to the proposed measures will the stop-work order be lifted,” he said.

This incident also led to MRT Corp CEO Datuk Wira Azhar Abdul Hamid to resign.
