A collision between two boats near Pulau Perhentian early this morning resulted in a boatman being thrown overboard. He was later found dead on the seabed.
Serach and rescue personnel found the remains of Rawi Ibrahim, 40, near the location of the collision at 10.25am.
“Rawi’s body was sent to the Besut Hospital for a post mortem,” Pulau Perhentian district police chief Supt Mohd Zamri Mohd Rowi told the New Straits Times Online.
Local police received a distress call informing them of the collision at about 2am this morning. A search and rescue team comprising of 25 individuals from the PDRM, the local village, and other related agencies was tasked with retrieving the victims.
Five people, including a toddler, were rescued from the two boats. The five survivors were Abdul Mohaimin Zamzuri, 21, his wife Nurul Ashikin Fatanah Yusof, 19, their son Mohamad Adam Mustaqim, 1, from Pulau Perhentian, a boatman Mohd Nazmi Daud, 27, of Kuala Besut and another passenger Nazrul Sabri, 16.
The boats were reportedly on a collision course between Pulau Perhentian village and Long Beach on the other side of the island.
