About 100 representatives of Malaysia’s blind community created a spectacle (no pun intended) today when they marched in protest to the headquarters of the Malaysian Association of the Blind (MAB) in Brickfields.
The protesters were calling for the resignation of MAB chief executive officer (CEO) Ganesan Suppayah, following allegations of financial and asset mismanagement.
Those marching to the MAB offices allege that Ganesan is mired in instances of self-enrichment, using his position as MAB CEO to push through questionable tenders and developing land owned by the MAB in Temerloh without the approval of the association’s council members.
The protesters, which included MAB vice president Hasidi Hassan, called for the resignation of Ganesan, as well as president Tengku Azlan Sultan Abu Bakar, deputy president Professor Veera Ramani, and vice president S Kulasegaran.
The Star Online‘s Dina Murad reports that the march began at around 9am in front of the Brickfields branch of the Public Bank, and ended outside the MAB office.
Police officers were on the ground ensuring the safety of those protesting, and to manage traffic flow in the area during the march.
When the march reavched the MAB office at 10am, protestors found the front gate of th compound locked, leading several protesters to climb over it.
The office’s back door was opened at 10.30am, allowing protesters entry into the MAB compound proper, where they continued their demonstration.
Hasidi said reports had been lodged on Ganesan and the three MAB leaders with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the Registrar of Societies (RoS), as well as the police, in early April.
