Last weekend’s #BERSIH4 rally was a watershed moment in Malaysian civil society, with hundreds of thousands of citizens pouring into the streets calling for electoral reform, government accountablilty, and the resignation of Prime Minister Najib Razak.
What #BERSIH4 wasn’t asking for was a viral meme based around its massive gathering in Dataran Merdeka, but it’s got one anyway.
Facebook user Belveen Singh (but he really, really wants you to call him Bel Pacino) is singlehandedly trying to turn himself into the Emo Protester, via a series of memes using a photo of Bel at #BERSIH4.
He literally has dozens of these on his Facebook page.
Bel even set up a new Twitter account, @Emo_Protestor, to help him spread the majesty of that one heartbreaking selfie in Dataran Merdeka. It hasn’t got many followers yet, but we say it’s just a matter of time.
