Electoral reform movement Bersih 2.0, which organised the mammoth #BERSIH4 rally on August 29 and 30, has pldeged to reveal its accounts in a month’s time.
Bersih 2.0 chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah made the pledge in response to Prime Minister Najib Razak’s claim that the coalition of 84 NGOs was practicing double standards in not revelaing its accounts, while pressuring him to be transparent about his finances and that of ruling Malay party UMNO.
Maria said in a month’s time, Bersih 2.0 would produce a one-month income-and-expense account on #BERSIH4, running from end of August to end of September.
“We will also audit the accounts and this will take time but we hope to get it out as soon as possible,” she told The Star Online‘s Rashvinjeet S Bedi.
Maria also shot back at Najib, saying the PM should be more concerned about the reform agenda brought up by Bersih at the recent rally in KL, Kuching, and Kota Kinabalu, than the source of Bersih 2.0’s funding and how it spent its funds.
“We are saying that our political system has fundamental failure and yet he doesn’t show any leadership to handle the reforms. Now that’s something wrong and unacceptable,” she said.
