Beef of the year? Malaysia picks a fight with Time Magazine

A recent article in the Asian edition of Time Magazine has rubbed certain people in the BN-led Federal Government the wrong way, and the dissatisfaction is being handled by the Home Ministry by way of an investigation … and heated words directed towards the world-renowned publication.

Time irked the government last week with an article, “Losing Faith: The Islamization of Malaysia” which questioned Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Najib Tun Razak’s ability to keep racial and religious strife in Malaysia in check. The article was also critical of Malaysia’s domestic policy in regards to its perceived intolerance towards minorities, non-Muslims, and Shiite Muslims.

The article and its author, Time Asian Editor Zoher Abdoolcarim, are now the subject of an investigation by a unit tasked with the monitoring of foreign publications running under the auspices of the Home Ministry.

A source said that a report is being prepared for presentation to the Chief Secretary of the Home Ministry, Dato’ Mohamad Khalid Bin Haji Shariff, after which time a decision will be made regarding the article and its allegations.

While that particular issue of the magazine was cleared for distribution in Malaysia, a communication was passed to the Time team that all negative comments against the Prime Minister are to be halted.

The source also said that the magazine’s release in Malaysia was delayed by a few hours, while it was released on time in neighbouring countries.
