Batu Caves set to welcome 1.6 million for Thaipusam this year

Batu Caves is all set to welcome an estimated 1.6 million devotees, visitors and tourists for Thaipusam this year.

This year’s festival — the 165th year of celebration — will begin from January 22. According to temple committee chairman Tan Sri R. Nadarajah, facilities for prayers at the riverside have been upgraded with some help from the Selangor Department of Irrigation and Drainage.

“We have also replaced all the wires to ensure sufficient electricity supply and avoid a repeat of the power disruption last year. I can guarantee 101% that such an incident will not happen this year,” he told Bernama.

Temple committee members would also be on the lookout for devotees who flout the rules.

“Our volunteers will restrain them at the temple entrance if their kavadi is decorated with items that shouldn’t be there or if they carry weapons such as a machete or are smoking cigars,” he was quoted further.
