Bakery outlet in Mid Valley ordered to close after pictures of rat on bread went viral

It’s official; rats are taking over the world!

Barely a week after several photos showing rats in a dried chilli tank at a Giant supermarket in Terengganu went viral, social media was rocked yet again by pictures of a rat spotted at a place it shouldn’t be: on a tray of bread.

On Sunday, Facebook user Melon Roux uploaded several photos onto her social media page.

In the pictures reportedly taken at a popular bakery located in Mid Valley Megamall, a huge rat could clearly be seen standing on top of a tray of freshly-baked bread.

In a posting accompanying the pictures, the woman said she was “stunned for a second” when she saw the rat.

She then immediately returned all the pastries she intended to buy and alerted the bakery’s staff.

The post has since gone viral on Facebook, having been shared more than 5,200 times:

Shortly after the post went viral, Komugi Bakery Malaysia issued a public apology, calling it an “unfortunate incident”.

According to a comment posted by the bakery on Melon Roux’s Facebook post, Komugi said the presence of rats were a “known issue” at Mid Valley Megamall, as such incident is said to have occured before.

“We have been trying to resolve (the issue) for some time,” Komugi said in the Facebook comment.

Meanwhile, the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has ordered the bakery to cease operations immediately and conduct a clean-up.

Its health and environment department director Dr Hayati Abdullah told The Star Online that Komuji can only reopen after the department deems its pest control and cleanliness are satisfactory.

“The period of closure is indefinite until these conditions are fulfilled,” she was quoted as saying, adding that the bakery will not be fined as the economic loss during the closure would be much more than the value of the penalty.
