Baby survives attack by monitor lizard in Pulau Tioman

An 8-month old baby girl was mauled at a workers’ quarters in a Pulau Tioman resort yesterday – and survived the ordeal, despite suffering serious injuries.

At 10am, the baby’s mother heard a loud noise in the kitchen of her home before discovering a monitor lizard, described to be the size of a goat, clawing at her child’s head.

The New Straits Times reports that she then chased the lizard off, which disappeared into the undergrowth nearby.

The baby was rushed to the Kapung Tekek Health Clinic before being taken to the Mersing Hospital for treatment. She was later transferred to the Sultan Ismail Hospital in Johor Baru.

Rompin district police chief Deputy Supt Johari Jahaya said the baby’s father lodged a police report at the Kampung Tekek police beat base.
