¡Ay, qué horror! Malaysian ambassador in Chile has residence invaded at knife-point

A chilling story from Santiago, Chile. The Malaysian ambassador, Mohamad Rameez Yahaya, had his official residence robbed by thieves who absconded with money, jewellery and other valuables worth over RM250,00 (nearly US$60,000). His family was present during the home invasion.

The diplomat, his wife and their five children live in Las Condes, an upmarket suburb outside of the capital. It is reported that five men took part in the robbery at 11:15pm Sunday night, Santiago time and were violent with the ambassador and his family.

Chilean news site biobiochile.cl writes that Rameez was hit over the head, while his family were bound with ropes. His wife was threatened by the robbers, who said they would cut off her ear if the family did not comply. After handing over valuables from his wife and children, they asked for money.

“They even threatened to kill my children if I refused to give them money,” he told Biobiochile. He says his family is, understandably, traumatized by the experience.

No official statement has been issued by the foreign ministry, although a source at Wisma Putra (Home office) has confirmed the incident.
