Imposing rock legend and actor Awie might not just be a beast on the stage: in court today, his wife claims that he once broke her ribs and fractured her nose during an argument, to the point of beating her with a mobile phone selfie stick.
37-year old Rozana Misbun, who is married to 47-year old Awie claimed in the Ampang Magistrate Court that she was severely beaten by her husband during an argument last June 2 at their home in Taman Ukay Bestari.
Following the alleged beating, Rozana told the court she went to a hospital in Taman Desa and asked the doctor for painkillers, but was advised to check herself into a ward for comprehensive treatment.
“The X-ray results showed that my nose was fractured and two of my left ribs were broken. I asked to be discharged after four days so I could return to our home,” she told Deputy Prosecutor Goh Ai Rene.
The argument apparently sparked off when Awie, whose real name is Ahmad Azhar Othman, accused Rozana of stealing his money.
When Rozana explained that the petty cash in their home was missing because she had used it for household expenses, the Wings frontman proceeded to punch her repeatedly in the face.
“I tried to block his hits with my hands, but he kept beating me until I fell to the floor. He then started stepping on me and kicking me on my left side,” she said during her testimony, as quoted by Harian Metro.
“Awie then took a monopod and swung it to my ear. I was in extreme pain, and pleaded him not to hit me anymore. After a while he stopped, and passed me a handkerchief to wipe the blood from my nose.”
Rozana then claims she was dragged to a car and was driven to a bank in Ampang to withdraw RM30,000 in cash to be handed to Awie.
The couple was then driven by Awie’s driver to another bank in Jalan Tun Razak in order for Rozana to clear out her Amanah Saham Bumiputera (ASB) account to pass to her husband, but she failed to conduct the transaction as she had left her account passbook at home.
After failing to pass Awie her ASB money, Rozana claims she was beaten once again by her husband.
When questioned by the prosecutor why she was made to withdraw the money, she said it was because Awie had placed his own money into her accounts previously to evade bankruptcy finance restrictions.
Awie was brought up on assault charges on July 4 last year, after a police report was lodged by Rozana at the urging of her family.
He is on trial under Section 325 of the Penal Code, which allows for a maximum sentence of seven years in prison, a fine, or both.
