Awie gets off wife-beating charges with RM10,000 and an apology

Rock god, actor, and all-around tough guy Awie, real name Ahmad Azhar Othman, was released from all charges of beating his ex-wife Rozana Misbun today after he agreed to pay her a RM10,000 compound and issue her a public apology.

The sentence was handed out in the Ampang Magistrate’s Court by presiding judge Ayuni Izzati Sulaiman, after Awie pleaded guilty to the offence.

The Wings frontman reportedly assaulted his wife on June 2 2014, after Rozana had told the rockstar that she had taken some of the petty cash in their home to pay for household expenses.

Initally, Awie denied to comment on news reports that he was being hauled up on charges in July 2014 for the beating, stating that his family matters were strictly off-limits to the local press.

According to Rozana’s court testimony, Awie proceeded to punch her “repeatedly in the face” until she fell to the floor, at which point he kicked her on the side of her abdomen.

Awie was also reported to have beat her with a selfie stick, dealing blows to the side of her head.

Rozana suffered a broken nose and ribs due to the assault.

The Malay Mail Online reports that Awie was charged under Section 325 of the Penal Code, which could have landed him in prison for seven years and a fine upon conviction.
