Australian PM: Objects found in Indian Ocean, might be Flight MH370

Austalian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has announced objects possibly related to the search for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 have been found in the southern Indian Ocean.

Abbott says new satellite images show two objects in the ocean and an Australian Orion aircraft is en route to the area.

“New and credible information has come to light in relation to the search … in the south Indian Ocean,” Mr Abbott told Parliament during Question Time.

“The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has received information based on satellite imagery of objects possibly related to the search.”

Since disappearing on March 8, investigators have concluded that Flight MH370 had diverted from its original flight path of Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, and is thought to have travelled in either of two directions: northwest into Central Asia or southwest into the Indian Ocean.

Australia has been leading the Search and Rescue (SAR) operations in the southern sector, an area 3,000km southwest of Perth.

AMSA says the search zone covers 600,000 square kilometers of ocean.

The entire search for Flight MH370 now covers an area of 7.7million square kilometers – larger than the entire land mass of Australia.
