August 22 will be our national day of mourning for MH17

Friday, August 22 has been declared a national day of mourning for the victims of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 – the date when the remains of 16 of the tragedy’s victims, 15 Malaysians and one Dutch national, will be brought back to Malaysia on a special flight, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

August 22 would not, however, be a made a public holiday, Muyiddin said.

The Star Online reports that the names of the 15 Malaysians whose remains will be returning home on next Friday would be revealed on the day itself. Muhyiddin said of the 16 victims, six were Muslims.

The body of the Dutch national will be flown to Malaysia due to a family request.

“The next-of-kin of the Dutch citizen requested for the remains to be cremated in Malaysia,” Muhyiddin said.

The reception ceremony will be held at KLIA’s Bunga Raya Complex.
