At least two teens killed daily in Malaysia due to underage driving: Police

Between January and March of this year, at least two teenagers were killed or seriously injured daily while driving cars or riding motorcycles without a licence, data from the Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department showed.

Of those who died during that period, 30 were under the age of 16, and nine were under the age of 18. 

Meanwhile, 46 out of the 157 unlicensed motorcyclists were seriously injured while 81 teenagers suffered minor injuries. 

As for unlicensed drivers under 18 years old, 59 suffered serious injuries, while 555 experienced minor injuries.

Malaysia recorded a total of 8,484 accidents involving unlicensed teenage drivers and motorcyclists from 2018 until March this year. Out of those, 2,617 resulted in fatal accidents or serious injuries. 

Meanwhile, another data set revealed that 444,922 summonses were issued to underage drivers between 2018 and March of this year. 

Between January and March this year, a total of 15,424 summonses were issued to unlicensed motorcyclists below the age of 16 and to owners who let somebody underage use their vehicles. Out of those, 8,601 summonses were issued to drivers under the age of 18.
