It’s better to be safe than sorry, we guess.
Despite an assurance from ‘red shirt’ rally organising chairman Jamal Yunos that they want to hold a peaceful protest today, the association of shop owners in Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown have been advised to close shop today.
“We were told that the association will not be accountable for any trouble that might arise or any damage caused,” said a vendor interviewed by The Star Online.
Business, he said, will resume tomorrow.
Today’s ‘red shirt’ rally is being billed as a counterpoint to massive demonstrations in KL last month by yellow-shirted protesters demanding Prime Minister Najib Razak’s resignation over a financial scandal, and broader reform by the government.
‘Red shirt’ rally organisers had earlier announced plans to march through a busy tourist district that includes many Chinese-owned shops, but have only received approval to rally at a central park, according to AFP.
