Arrested editors from The Malaysian Insider to be released at 7pm

The three senior editors from newsportal The Malaysian Insider who were arrested for sedition during a raid yesterday evening are expected to be released from police custody at 7pm today.

This follows the rejection of the PDRM’s application for a remand order for TMI managing editor Lionel Morais, Bahasa Malaysia news editor Amin Shah Iskandar, and analysis editor Zulkifli Sulong.

TMI CEO and editor Jahabar Sadiq, and The Edge publisher Ho Kay Tat, who were arrested for the same charge earlier this morning, will be held overnight.

Lawyer Syaredzan Johan, who is representing the editors, told The Rakyat Post, ““In my submissions, I mentioned that all of them gave their full cooperation and so there is no reason to detain them further.”

Jahabar and Ho are being detained under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act and Section 4 of the Sedition Act 1948.

The PDRM’s application to have their remand extended is scheduled to be heard at the Jalan Duta courthouse tomorrow morning.

At 8pm tonight, a candlelight vigil is expected to be held outside the Dang Wangi police station by journalists, in solidarity with the detained TMI editors.
