Shoppers at a Tesco hypermarket in the small town of Bangi, just outside of Kuala Lumpur, were left startled when a group of armed robbers attacked the jewelry shop situated inside.
The incident occurred Tuesday evening, at 8:45pm, and the group of four male suspects made off with RM700,000 (US$170,000) worth of wares.
Police say they received a distress signal that the hypermarket had been robbed, with witnesses reporting that four men, all wearing helmets and visors, stormed the shop, brandishing a pistol and hammer.
Three employees were attending to six customers when the incident occurred, although none were hurt in the incident.
While a guard was on duty at the time of the robbery, officers report that he was “crippled with fear” when one of the robbers pointed a gun at him.
A short mobile phone clip of the incident taken by a person on the ground has since made its way onto the internet, showing that one suspect held a hammer, while the other had a gun. Officers say CCTV footage indicated that the entire robbery took only five minutes from beginning to end.
The case is now under investigation as an armed robbery under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code.
