Anwar verdict: Pakatan will become stronger, says PAS sec-gen

Opposition coalition Pakatan Rakyat will not wither should its key leader — Anwar Ibrahim — be sent to jail on Feb 10, says PAS.

Amid speculation that the DAP, PKR and PAS alliance — formed in 2008 — could fall apart should Anwar be found guilty of sodomy, Pas secretary-general Datuk Mustafa Ali said the group would instead become far stronger, the Malay Mail Online reports.

“Pakatan Rakyat will be stronger because we need to be responsible… we need to continue the struggle,” Mustafa was quoted as saying at a press conference today.

“Even if Anwar is not around… Kak Wan (PKR president Wan Azizah Wan Ismail) is there, and so is Azmin (Ali). That’s PKR’s leadership… we work with the parties, not the individual,” he said.

Anwar was charged in 2008 with sodomising his ex-political aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan and in 2012, the High Court found him not guilty. The matter was then referred to the Court of Appeal which overturned the ruling and sentenced him to five years in jail.

On Feb 10, the 67-year-old politician will know from the Federal Court if that decision stays. Hearing of the appeal took place in November.
