The current power struggle over who should be Selangor’s Menteri Besar should be seen as part of Pakatan Rakyat’s overall reformasi, or reformation, plan and not intended to just be a move to oust the current MB, said de facto PR leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The former Deputy Prime Minister and husband of PKR president Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail – the coalition’s endorsed candidate to replace MB Tan Sri Khalid – said the “perceived tussle” between himself and Khalid should not be seen as a personal feud, but rather a move to fix outstanding problems in the state.
“There is nothing personal in this issue. I am not one who will lambast Khalid for anything that others may perceive he is doing wrong, but then there are many things he did not handle well and this was hurting the people,” he told The Malay Mail Online‘s Kazi Mahmood.
Anwar, who is also currently Selangor’s economic adviser, said that although Khalid’s Pakatan Rakyat administration of the state government was instrumental in Selangor accumulating a RM3 billion surplus, there were many other issues in the state that remain unresolved.
“On the issue of road networks, there is RM1 billion in the state coffers that was allocated to fix the roads, but nothing was done,” he said.
“The state of garbage collection in some parts of Selangor is horrible, and I had to personally fix this.”
He also brushed aside concerns over Wan Azizah’s nomination for the MB post, saying that she had the support of the majority of Selangor’s state assemblymen.
“It is very unlikely that the ruler will not approve of our candidate, though there is still the term called ‘discretion’.”
When asked on the party’s plan in case the sultan rejected Dr Wan Azizah, Anwar said he did not want to pre-empt the ruler’s decision.
