Another academician under probe for sedition

Authorities are set to begin questioning constitutional law expert Dr Abdul Aziz Bari for allegedly making seditious statements insulting to the Sultan of Selangor.

Aziz, a former lecturer at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) is expected to be called in for questioning at thr Sabak Bernam district police headquarters tomorrow, after police received more than a thousand police reports against him.

The Star Online reports that a police source said concerning Aziz, “He has not been arrested, but will just come in for questioning tomorrow (Wednesday).”

Aziz is alleged to have made statements in an online news article earlier this month in which he questioned the role of the Malay Rulers in politics and implied that the discretionary powers of the Sultan of Selangor were limited only to instances where there was a hung state legislative assembly.

The sedition investigation on Aziz would make it the second such probe on a Malaysian law academician in recent memory, after Universiti Malaya law professor Azmi Sharom was charged earlier this month.
