Call of duty or death: Ambulance makes U-turn and travels against traffic on busy highway to help accident victim

An ambulance caught seen travelling against traffic on the busy East Cost Expressway had reportedly been heading towards an accident site.

According to a report by the New Straits Times’ T.N. Alagesh, the driver had initially ignored the accident as he was on his way back from duty. But he later decided to make a U-turn to help the victim.

And what happened next was captured on camera by a shell-shocked motorist who: the ambulance was moving against traffic on the fast lane in its heroic (not?) mission to help someone.

Here. See it for yourselves.

Pahang Health department director Dr Zainal Ariffin Omar, quoted in the report, had said that the ambulance was on its way from Raub when the driver noticed an accident some distance from the Karak toll plaze. He decided not to stop.

But guilt probably kicked it later, because according to Dr Zainal, the driver decided to turn back and help the motorcyclist involved in the accident.

Dr Zainal told the NST that the department would investigate if the driver and medical staff had in fact committed a breach of standard procedures.

“In any circumstances, we have to help people and try to save lives. However, we have to comply to SOP in order not to endanger our own staff as well as the public, including preventing any mishap. To be fair to all parties, the Health Department will investigate the matter and if the ambulance driver had violated the law, then action will be taken. It will also help us to avoid similar cases from recurring,” he was quoted as saying.
