Narcotics officers have thwarted a clever attempt to smuggle RM372,000 (US$125,000) worth of ketamine into Taiwan, after seizing several a batch of cendol bowls with the drugs hidden inside.

In two separate raids in the Klang Valley this week, central police headquarters Bukit Aman’s narcotics department has reported that two men, aged 22 and 23, have been arrested. The duo had planned to use a courier service to smuggle the drugs into the island nation. Officers believe that Malaysia was only a transit point used by a syndicate in transporting the drugs to their final destination.

“The drugs were hidden in steel bowls — like the ones used to serve cendol — soldered together to avoid detection,” said an investigator.

In total, 154 bowls were hauled in as evidence, along with a locally made Perodua Myvi.

Malaysian investigators are now liaising with their Taiwanese counterparts to find other members of the drug ring, while the two suspects under arrest will be held in remand until June 18 as investigations are on-going.

Ketamine — popularly associated with tranquilizing horses, has had a renaissance among partygoers, who fancy anything from a mild trance-like vibe, to all-out disorientation leaving them in a paralytic k-hole while their friends look on.

The recreational effects of the drug are relatively short-lasting, but you might die. Also, long-term use will make you incontinent.

Ket heads … don’t grab those colostomy bags just yet.
