Airbnb’s security team has taken swift action by suspending the account of a homestay operator in Sabah accused of installing a hidden camera, pending an investigation.

This response comes after foreign tourists reported discovering a hidden camera in their accommodation’s socket.

Amanpreet Bajaj, the general manager of Airbnb in India, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, expressed disappointment over such actions, emphasizing that they are prohibited.

He noted that while security incidents on Airbnb are rare, they take reports seriously and provide support to affected guests. Bajaj’s comments were conveyed in an email to ,, in response to a report highlighted last Sunday.

The Tourism, Arts, and Culture Ministry also indicated its serious concern regarding the allegations.

Minister Tiong King Sing disclosed that the Sabah state government, along with the ministry and related agencies, has been directed to take strict action in response to this incident.

The incident first surfaced on the Xiaohongshu social media platform based in Shanghai on Sept. 14, subsequently gaining attention through a local news portal.

During a romantic honeymoon escapade, a Chinese couple encountered an unsettling situation.

They stumbled upon a hidden camera cleverly concealed within a power socket at their Airbnb, placed strategically to face their bed.

This disturbing experience prompted significant discussion when the pair shared their ordeal on the Chinese social media platform, XiaoHongShu

They raised questions about the safety of Malaysia as a destination for travelers, with the tourist, identified as Zhenmei Beauty on the platform, stating, “Discovered hidden cameras in the guesthouse. Is it safe to travel to Malaysia?”

Upon returning to China, these tourists felt compelled to share their harrowing experience as a cautionary tale, urging others to remain vigilant against hidden camera incidents.
