Two planes, one from AirAsia and the other from Jetstar, were a hundred meters away from a midair collision.
According to China news agency Xinhua, as translated by Bernama, the near-collision reportedly happened on Thursday morning at the Coolangatta airport in Queensland, shortly after the AirAsia craft took off.
The Chinese news agency reported that the AirAsia A330 airbus, which was on its way to New Zealand, came within 152m of the Jetstar plane – which was about to touch down – triggering the alarm to sound in both cockpits.
Thankfully, the quick-thinking Jetstar pilots reportedly took evasive action to avoid the collision, by putting their aircraft into a climb. The pilots then reportedly took corrective action to restore the safe distance between the two planes.
According to the report, the minimum separation gap between aircrafts in Australia is 305m.
The incident reportedly prompted the Australian Transport Safety Bureau to conduct an investigation.
