We told you to take the train if you wanted to avoid public transportation rate hikes, but yeah, we spoke too soon.
Hot on the heels of SPAD’s announcement that taxi and express bus fares would rise on April 1, Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTM) yesterday announced that it too would be raising the fares for its popular intercity Komuter service.
In a statement, the rail company the rate hikes for one-way trips was dependent on the distance of travel between stations and destinations.
The increase in rates will set commuters back up to RM7.10 per trip, The Rakyat Post reports.
Still, there’s a silver lining for KTM’s regular customers: stored value card users will be getting a 20% discount on fares, weekly pass holders will be getting a scaled discount of between 18-26%, and monthly pass holders will be getting a discount of between 19-35%.
And before you ask, no – these fares will not have the new Goods and Services Tax (GST) tacked on to them after the fact.
Children aged between four to 12 years old, as well as senior citizens and disabled passengers will continue to enjoy a 50% discount on printed fares.
KTM said that the rate increase is rolling out now that it received approval from the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD).
This is the first time the KTM has raised its rates since 2003.
