After hudud law disagreement, DAP to review its membership in Pakatan Rakyat

Disappointed with Kelantan’s PAS government’s decision to proceed with the tabling (and passing) of Islamic hudud law, the Democratic Action Party (DAP) will be reviewing its membership in the Pakatan Rakyat political coalition, which currently sees it, PAS, and PKR as equal partners.

DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang said the party’s central leadership will meet next Monday to take a hard look at DAP’s position in the coalition, following the Kelantan state government’s “move against PR’s common policy framework”.

“I am disappointed… It is a question of being sincere, loyal and truthful to the common policy framework which has been the basis of our partnership in the past six or seven years,” he said outside Parliament today, as quoted by The Malay Mail Online‘s Joseph Sipalan.

“I am disappointed.”

This afternoon, the Kelantan State Legislative Assembly unanimously passed the amendements to the state’s Syariah Criminal Code Enactment II 1993, bringing the PAS-led government one step closer to enacting Islamic hudud law – a cornerstone of the party’s manifesto for decades.

While PAS’s partners DAP and PKR have opposed the plan to varying degrees, the hudud law tabling was met with resounding support from the Kelantan chapter of UMNO, PAS’s bitter rival in the quest for the crucial Malay-Muslim vote in Malaysia.
