Aegis Malaysia apologises to Philippines for video

After a wave of outrage, business outsourcing company Aegis has apologised for a video that puts the Philippines down in favour of Malaysia.

The three-minute video ad, which was produced and uploaded by the company’s Malaysian chapter, depicts Philippines as a country with a poor economic climate and brands Malaysia as a ‘preferred alternate’.

After demands and criticism from the Filipino public and its government, Aegis Malaysia released this statement on its Facebook fan page: “We regret the upload of the recent video on Malaysia. The video was developed locally by an agency and uploaded in error and the contents were not approved by Aegis Corporate.’

The statement also said that the video was developed ‘locally by an ad agency and uploaded in error’.

“We would like to reiterate that Aegis has had a great experience in the Philippines and this has been one of the keys to our success.”

The video, which has since been taken down, said among other things that the Philippines was prone to ‘natural disasters like typhoons, cyclones, etcetera, impacting the operation of businesses and bloating up the cost of living’.

“Unstable businesses generally lead to higher attrition rates, which make availability of suitable talent, tougher.

“For the same reason, Malaysia is becoming a preferred alternate to the Philippines and is fast emerging as the ultimate investment destination for multinationals, boasting of a world-class infrastructure that not just oversees the future but also houses innovative spaces and systems that blend tradition and technology.

According to Inquirer.net the Philippine Embassy in Malaysia said its government continues to improve the ease of doing business in the Philippines.
