Activist under sedition probe for starting anti-Najib “Citizens’ Declaration” petition online

The Malaysian activist who set up an online petiton collecting signatures for the Save Malaysia / Citizens’ Declaration campaign is now under investigation under the Sedition Act 1948.

Speaking for activist Azrul Mohd Khalib, lawyer Melissa Sasidaran told The Malay Mail Online‘s Yap Tzu Ging today that her client was taken in for questioning by the PDRM in Petaling Jaya this afternoon. He was reportedly grilled over the details of his petition, set up on popular site Change.org, and the level of his involvement.

Azrul presented himself at the PJ police station at 2pm today and was interrogated by PDRM officers there for about an hour.

“They asked whether the change.org website belongs to him, whether he created the petition… they also asked whether he knows its implication on the government and prime minister,” she said.

“After questioning, the police confiscated his phone and laptop. We cannot really tell when they will call us back, it can be soon or a month ahead.”

The Citizens’ Declaration, now more widely known as the Save Malaysia campaign, is a non-partisan movement headed by former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and various politicians and social activists calling for the resignation or removal of Prime Minister Najib Razak by any constitutional means, due to their lack of faith in the PM’s leadership and his involvement in several ongoing scandals, particularly that surrounding 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

According to Sasidaran, Azrul is being probed under Section 4 of the Sedition Act, which covers various offences related to sedition, but the PDRM had yet to specify which violation in particular Azrul was alleged to have committed.
