Abu Sayyaf militants in the south Philippines have finally released Constable Zakiah Aleip, the marine policeman abducted from Pulau Mabul, Semporna in July last year.
Sabah police commissioner Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said Zakiah was released by his captors at about 2.30pm last Friday, and was sent to Sulu at around 11pm the same day.
“Our team of police managed to get him out of Indanan in Sulu and he arrived in Sandakan at about 7.30am on Saturday,” Jalaluddin told The Star Online.
On Juy 12, Zakiah was taken captive after gunmen attacked a marine police patrol on Pulau Mabul.
While Zakiah was abducted, his parter, Corporal Ab Rajah Jamuan, 32, was killed in the firefight.
At one point, his abductors had demanded a ransom of RM5 million for Zakiah’s life.
Zakiah is believed to have been held in an Abu Sayyaf stronghold in the Philippines’ Jolo Island.
