Johor Bahru residents were greeted by a light pillar phenomenon recently. While we are unsure how they felt about it, the internet certainly was not shy to express their interpretations of the occurrence.

Light pillars are optical atmospheric phenomena where pillars of light appear to beam up from the ground into the sky. The effect is created by the reflection of light from tiny ice crystals that are suspended in the atmosphere or that comprise high-altitude clouds.

Several internet users said it looked more like Sauron, the antagonist from Lord of The Rings, eerily watching from his tower in Mount Doom (not a real place).

“Be careful Sauron is watching”.

“That’s Sauron’s tower. Anyone who took his ring better come forth”.

Meanwhile, a few others thought it looked like a Marvel character, Wanda Maximoff, about to make an entrance.

One user joked that it was Thanos on the way to earth.

Whereas some warned that if the video made its way to Facebook which is deemed to be more conservative, the phenomenon would be politicized and branded as the world coming to an end.

“If this goes into Facebook, they would automatically paste a sad, end-of-the-world type of song and say that young people have neglected their faith and that we are not ready in their caption.”

“Don’t let that one ‘ustaz’ see this or else he is going to claim that it is the end of the world”.

What do you think it looked like? Let us know in the comments.
