More than 9,000 Johor residents have been evacuated and put into 93 temporary relief centers (PPS) across nine areas of the state after heavy rainfall has affected their homes in the southern state.
Mersing, Kota Tinggi, Kluang, Segamat, Pontian, Batu Pahat, Kulai, Johor Baru and Muar have all experienced various states of severe flooding.
Hardest-hit of all was Kluang, where 747 families comprising 2,666 individuals have been forced to leave their homes, followed by Kota Tinggi, with 695 families affected.
Malaysia’s Meteorological Department has issued a continued warning to the area, telling residents to brace themselves for more “dangerous levels” of rainfall in both areas, and adding that severe conditions were also expected in Segamat, Muar, Batu Pahat, Kluang, Pontian, Kulai, and Johor Baru. There was also an alert warning for Tangkak.
Two roads entering Kota Tinggi have been closed to all vehicles, while another major road entering Mersing has been opened to light cars only. Videos of dramatically flooded streets and submerged cars have been making the rounds on the internet over the weekend.
Pahang state has also been affected by heavy rainfall, with families based in the coastal town of Rompin being evacuated from their homes early Monday morning following heavy rains on Sunday.
Across Malaysia, many areas have been hit with heavy rains over recent days, resulting in thousands being evacuated from their homes.
