Maybe it’s all the talk about Islamic law and what Muslims can or can’t do with themselves (and what they have or haven’t done to others): a six-year old shaky cam video of a group of Malay women getting drunk in a flat party has gone superviral on Malaysian social media.
Although SuaraTV reports the video, depicting a group of Malay women sharing canned beer in a flat, only recently flooded people’s Facebook walls and Twitter timelines, we tracked down a copy of the video uploaded to YouTube a little over six years ago, entitled “Awek Ganu Mabuk”.
Because yes. Judging from their speech, these ladies were definitely from Terengganu, and yes. They were getting mad drunk.
We can’t really tell what’s being said most of the time, partly because of the poor mid-2000s audio recording technology being used, and because Bahasa Malaysia spoken in a slurry, Carlsberg-addled Terengganu accent doesn’t sound like Bahasa Malaysia at all. We might need closed captions on this one, is what we’re saying. We could make them out saying “cheers”, though.
The video has a respectable view count of 231,380 at the time of this writing, which is okay for something uploaded six years ago. Maybe most of the views are recent. SuaraTV reports that it’s been shared by 707 users on Facebook so far.
SuaraTV also noted that there are claims the video was shot as far back as 2005, but without any proof of that so far (does anyone recognize which edition of the Carlsberg can that was?), we’re going to go with its upload date.
It seems like Malaysians are so caught up with news on Islamic law that they’re looking for even more fodder to talk about. Dredge it all up!
