An aftershock measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale hit Ranau at 2.29am.
Tremors were felt in other areas including Kudat, Beluran, Kota Marudu, Kota Belud, Keningau and Kinabatangan, the Malaysian Meteorological Department said.
The tremor was described as a moderate earthquake; the strongest aftershock to hit Ranau since the 5.9 quake on June 5 in which 15 people were killed.
The Star Online reports that the quake was strong enough to have those living in high-rise residential buildings in Kota Kinabalu running out of their homes in fear.
Damages from this tremor have yet to be reported.
