Since 2011, authorities have recorded 32 incidents involving escalators.
Bernama reports that (as we have read several times lately) — the highest number of victims were children aged six and below.
Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) director-general Datuk Mohtar Musri was quoted as saying that in many of these cases, the kids had used escalators without adult supervision.
“Four escalator mishaps were reported to DOSH this year. On average, four to five cases were reported to DOSH each year,” he told Bernama adding that 10,951 escalators were registered with the department.
Several cases of children involved in escalator mishaps have been reported over the past months, including a three-year-old boy whose genitals were caught in the between the steps of a shopping mall escalator, and a two-year-old whose hand had been trapped at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
