There are 22,000 uninsured cars out there, and they all belong to the police says deputy PM

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, clarified to parliament last week that police vehicles in Malaysia are all uninsured.  The Home Minister gave a written response on the matter after representative Teo Nie Ching (DAP-Kulai) asked for clarification.

There are about 22,000 vehicles owned by the police force in Malaysia, and all are “not protected by insurance” according to the Deputy PM.

Don’t get any ideas throwing yourselves in front of these guys! He added that any road accident, regardless of whose fault it was, involving police vehicles would result in difficulty pursuing compensation.

If an incident were to occur, a third party would then have to write to a legal advisor within the police force to investigate the matter. Claims involving any government vehicle are then vetted for the possibility that the government may then pay out for any losses incurred by the other driver.

Also, you must lodge a detailed police report within 24 hours of the accident if you expect any kind of financial reimbursement.

Maintenance on vehicles is paid for via department allocation for car upkeep.

There you have it – stay well out of the way of wily police vehicles, and make sure to yield, it sounds like a lot of bureaucracy and a whole lot of time to get that disputed side-mirror repaired.
