The strongest El Nino phenomenon in nearly two decades has finally ended, but it left quite a mark on Malaysians.
According to statistics released by the Health Ministry, there were more than 200 heat-related illnesses reported during the El Nino period.
Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam was quoted by The Star Online as saying that a total of 212 cases were reported by government health facilities as of 4 May.
“This comprises 52 cases of heat cramps, 136 cases of heat exhaustion and 24 cases of heatstroke,” he said in a written reply to Dr Mansor Abd Rahman (BN-Sik), who had asked him about the number of heatstroke-related cases and the government’s efforts to manage them.
Dr Subramaniam added there were two fatalities reported – one in Johor and the other in Kedah.
